What AFA Does!

As the Almanor Fishing Association (AFA) begins our 2023 Membership Drive I want to thank you for your past membership. If you were not a member in 2022, please consider joining the AFA Family as we enter our thirty-eighth year of promoting, preserving, and enhancing the Lake Almanor fishery.

In 2022 through the generosity of our members and business sponsors AFA was able to host the fifth Veterans Fishing Day on Lake Almanor where more than a hundred Veterans were treated to a day of fishing and a barbecue lunch at Rec#1. In addition, for the second year in a row we provided every Plumas County fourth grader with a new fishing rod.  We assisted Plumas County Fisheries Biologist Amber Mouser at youth fishing events at both Round Valley Reservoir and Lake Almanor.  AFA volunteers also provided eight youth fishing clinics at Rec#1.

As we begin our annual membership drive AFA volunteers are two months into our 2022/23 fish pen season. Our fifty thousand fertile Eagle Lake Rainbows are growing quickly and will be ready for release in April. Our volunteer feeders deserve special recognition for their efforts and dedication to our program.

For the first time in three years AFA was able to hold our annual picnic in 2022. The picnic was well attended and the most successful in the history of our program.

AFA is proud and honored to serve the Lake Almanor Community through our outreach programs. That said this board recognizes fish, and our fish pen program are the cornerstone of our organization. To that end we are excited to share that we have begun the process of replacing our 38-year-old fish pens. In 2022 we replaced four pens and docking, and we have two additional pens and docking in the works for 2023.

AFA continues to collaborate with other community members to fight additional cold-water releases from Lake Almanor. The AFA Board provided five thousand dollars towards the battle, and we are prepared to do whatever possible to protect Lake Almanor’s cold water and our world class cold-water fishery.
