What AFA Does!

___________________________________________________________________

As the Almanor Fishing Association (AFA) begins our 2024 Membership Drive, I want to thank you for your past membership. If you were not a member in 2023, please consider joining the AFA Family as we enter our thirty-ninth year of promoting, preserving, and enhancing the Lake Almanor fishery.

In 2023 through the generosity of our members and business sponsors AFA was able to host the sixth Veterans Fishing Day on Lake Almanor where more than a hundred Veterans were treated to a day of fishing and a barbecue lunch at Rec#1.

In addition, for the third year in a row we provided every Plumas County fourth grader with a new fishing rod. AFA volunteers assisted Plumas County Fisheries Biologist Amber Mouser at youth fishing events throughout Plumas County where each child received a new rod and reel. AFA volunteers also provided eight youth fishing clinics at Rec#1 where attendees received a youth rod/reel.

AFA volunteers are two months into our 2023-24 fish pen season. Our fifty thousand fertile West Virginia Rainbows and sixty-five hundred browns from Feather River College are growing quickly and will be ready for release in April. As we prepare for the release of our two millionth trout into Almanor in year 2024/25 our volunteer feeders deserve special recognition for their efforts and dedication to our program.

The last Saturday in July, AFA hosted our 28th annual picnic at LACC Rec #1, the event was well attended and the most successful picnic in the history of our program.

AFA is proud and honored to serve the Lake Almanor Community through our outreach programs. That said, this board recognizes fish, and our fish pen program are the cornerstone of our organization. To that end we are excited to share that we have begun the process of replacing our 39-year-old fish pens. In 2022 we replaced four pens and docking, and we replaced two pens and docking in 2023.We have four old pens left that need replacement.

AFA continues to collaborate with other community members to fight additional cold-water releases from Lake Almanor. The AFA Board provided five thousand dollars towards the battle, and we are prepared to do whatever possible to protect Lake Almanor’s cold water, and our world class cold-water fishery.
